Right when I was assigned the Faux Selfies project, I knew I wanted to use a dolphin for my artworks. This was partly for the sake of absurdity and humor, and partly because I knew a dolphin would be easier to draw and animate than something more complex. However, leading factor that made me use a dolphin was how dolphins always look like they’re smiling, just because of the shape of their mouth.

Because the dolphin is smiling, I thought I could use him as a symbol of fun, excitement, leisure, and humor. I figured that fun is headbanging at a music festival, excitement is dropping in on a massive wave, leisure is slugging margarita pitchers by the pool, and humor is walking a pet human, Billy, down the path.

I also got the idea of a surfing dolphin from real life. Dolphins surf all the time. They just don’t use a board.

(This picture is not edited. If didn't know dolphins can surf, look it up)
