Right when I was given this project prompt, I knew what I wanted to do for my video. I often have dreams about skiing, surfing, or skateboarding, but I knew that animating skiing or surfing wouldn’t look as good as I want it to. So, I chose to do skateboarding partly because it follows the idea of a daydream, partly because I knew it would be possible to make it look good, and partly because I thought it would be fun and challenging.
The trickiest part of the project was creating the illusion of spin along the axes that live in the plane of the screen. For example, it is difficult to spin a person unless it’s from a top or bottom view. Similarly, it’s difficult to spin the board without using a front or back view. To deal with this, I took pictures of myself from all four sides, so I could switch between the images midway through a jump to make it look like I’m spinning. This made animation quite tedious.
My favorite part of the video was the transition from reality into animation. I may end up doing more things like that for fun in the future.
